Learning Through Fencing Friends, Growing Through Mentoring Hearts

Growing Together to Build Caring Global Communities

How It All Began

Engarde for Good was founded to bring together over a decade of experiences and lessons, transforming what I have received into opportunities for others.

People often ask about the inspiration behind the name Engarde for Good. En garde is the French phrase used in fencing that means “Get ready!” or “Take your position!” a command called out by referees before a match begins. We chose this name to reflect our readiness to step forward and meet challenges whenever help is needed.

Founded by 18 year old Stewart S. Lee, Engarde for Good was born out of the realization that student athletes balancing academics and sports often face unexpected obstacles that can lead to discouragement or setbacks. In particular, high school athletes struggle with the heavy financial burden of training and equipment costs while also managing the intense stress of college admissions. Through both personal experience and research, we recognized that the need for mental and emotional support in this journey is greater than ever.

At its core, Engarde for Good seeks to reduce the financial barriers of fencing by recirculating clean, gently used equipment, reducing environmental waste while providing opportunities to donate or trade gear with those in need. Beyond this, we aim to support athletes as they transition to college and beyond, helping them overcome career uncertainties and build a mentorship network through connections across diverse backgrounds.

Through partnerships, Engarde for Good also works to expand field specific mentorship opportunities, enabling student-athletes to continue training while also sharing academic knowledge and professional experiences. Our mission is to foster meaningful service, collaboration, and exchange of ideas, ultimately growing into a global nonprofit community.

My Story

Scouting (2012–2025, 13 years)
Beginning in elementary school, ten years in Scouting became the foundation of my character. Annual summer and winter camps, community service projects, and guidance from inspiring leaders taught me perseverance, teamwork, and that true leadership means lifting others up.

Intergenerational Service (2018–present, 7 years)
Since middle school, I loved to volunteered events at a church’s Friday fish fry program, serving elderly community members. Over 5 years, I have served more than 300 seniors with meals, companionship, and support, building bonds that turned service into a reciprocal exchange of wisdom and growth.

Fencing (2017–present, 7 years)
Starting competitive fencing in 2017 opened the door to national and international arenas, from U.S. national championships to European Cadet Circuits. Through these experiences, I learned that regardless of language or culture, respect and sportsmanship are universal values. Fencing revealed that competition and collaboration can coexist, creating greater meaning together.

Mentorship (2022–present, 3 years)
Since entering high school, I have mentored my younger brother Leo and other youth scouts. As a Senior Patrol Leader, I have guided more than 23 scouts and young athletes, some of whom improved their academic performance or distinguished themselves in regional competitions they pursued. Through these experiences, I learned that leadership shines not in achievements alone, but in relationships that help others discover their own potential.

Our Mission

Engarde for Good is more than a charity.
It is a platform that connects the opportunities and resources I have received with youth who may otherwise be left behind due to economic or social barriers.

This organization represents a commitment to giving back where personal growth fuels community transformation, and community transformation in turn empowers individuals.

Our Vision

En Garde for Good is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered in the State of Texas that expands access to fencing, mentorship, and education so young people can realize their potential and, by sharing their gifts, help build a more compassionate world!
